The tragic rape and murder case of a Kolkata doctor has shaken India, stirring a wave of outrage and calls for justice from all corners, including celebrities. Actress Celina Jaitly has joined this call, sharing her own painful experiences to highlight the ongoing problem of victim-blaming.
In a moving post on X, Jaitly opened up about her school years, revealing how she was harassed by university boys who followed her school rickshaw, making crude remarks and throwing stones to get her attention. When she reported this to her teacher, she was met with blame instead of support. The teacher criticized Jaitly for being “too westernized” and not dressing traditionally, implying that her appearance was the cause of the harassment.
Jaitly also shared a traumatic incident where a man flashed her while she was waiting for her rickshaw. This event left her feeling that she was to blame, a feeling worsened by her teacher’s comments. For years, she struggled with self-blame, a painful legacy of the victim-blaming culture she experienced.

Further adding to her suffering, Jaitly recounted a violent act where boys cut the wires of her scooty’s brakes to get her attention, which resulted in serious injuries. Even then, when her classmates reported the incident, they were told by the teacher that Jaitly’s “forwardness” and alleged “loose character” were the real issues.
While Celina Jaitley’s story highlights the very real and personal experiences of harassment many women face, I believe the conversation needs to dig deeper.
