Anurag Kashyap Says Animal Started Conversations About Misogyny Than Any Feminist Film; ‘Being Provoked…’

Ranbir Kapoor’s film, Animal, has been receiving a lot of love from the audience and criticism as well. The movie also starred Anil Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, Bobby Deol, and Tripti Dimri. The movie has received backlash for glorifying toxic masculinity. However, Anurag Kashyap has a different view of the movie.

In an interview with OTT Play, the filmmaker stated that one cannot for responsibility on anyone. Kashyap asked who watched the film that people considered to be feminist. He added, “Only a handful of people watch them and underline if it was a real feminist film or a pseudo-feminist film.”

The filmmaker went on to say that a movie like Animal has “galvanised” more feminists than any other feminist movie. He said, “It has created more discussion around misogyny than any other film. So it is doing something good.”

Anurag added that society needed a provacateur to understand things. He said, “More people were taught feminism because of Animal and the discussions around it.”

He questioned why everyone is scared of a provocateur, as we are all educated people. He said, “Why are we afraid of someone who provokes us?”

Anurag further stated that he thinks being provoked is a good thing, and he has always tried to make movies that would make people “uncomfortable.”

Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s film has been raking in huge numbers at the box office. The movie has crossed Rs 400 crore at the box office in India in a week. It was released on December 1, 2023.
