Avatar 3 Will Finally Change The Lead Character; James Cameron Has Different Plans For Jake Sully

James Cameron’s Avatar is set to release three more parts in the next decade. The series has seen successful two releases that took a decade to release, however, the upcoming films have already been under development for years. Unlike part 2 which took years to shoot, parts 3 and 4 reportedly already have some filming done. Now reports about what the follow-up story will be are making rounds on the internet. Based on hints and theories things do not seem so good for fans of Jake Sully.

Jake Sully played by Sam Worthington was first introduced in 2009’s Avatar. He was an army officer twin of a scientist who lost his life while his fully functional Avatar clone was sitting ducks at Pandora. Jake is given the chance to take over his twin’s clone and in turn, he will get paid enough to get his prosthetic legs back and return to the army. However, after spending time with the Navi he changes his mind, the new world becomes his more than the world he had known.

Jake’s character in the first film served as an introduction to Pandora, similar to the audience he was new to the world and gave a human perspective. However, the same cannot be said for The Way of Water. Jake’s character arc was pretty much repeated while there were other more important characters introduced. There wasn’t much for him to do other than once again turn as a guide for the human audience to witness the world of Pandora. However, with the upcoming film, the character may have outlived its usefulness. His heroic acts too have been repetitive with “Will he. won’t he” save the world, again.

The film has been a success so far with the help of its world-building, however, from here on the filmmaker needs to make some bold decisions to shake up the formula and give the audience something unexpected. With characters like Kiri, Spider and Lo’ak all exploring their own stories to tell, the next generation has far more exciting journeys than what Jake could offer. The series so far has only one big twist and it’s about time for another which could be Jake Sully’s death.

Reports have also hinted that Avatar 3 will have a new narrator after Jake Sully did it for the first two films. It also hints at how the franchise could be moving on from Jake’s character. Actor Jack Champion revealed in an interview that Avatar 3 will feature a massive twist fans are not expecting. With Jake’s narration being replaced, the new candidates could be either of the new-gen characters.

The end of The Way Of Water introduced Kiri’s special powers which could turn her into the main character material. Lo’ak also has his set of duties to follow through become the leader of his people and bring them to safety. He might use what his father taught him or make mistakes and become a different kind of leader. Meanwhile, similar to Jake, Spider could provide a mix of narration as an outsider who is looking at the world from the inside out. Without a narrator from the outer world, we might also see Pandora in a new light, and experience it differently.

For the unversed, Avatar 3 is set to release on December 19, 2025, followed by 4 on December 21, 2029, and 5 on December 19, 2031. It is unclear if the director has any further plans for the same.
