Best Of 2023: Jawan, 12th Fail, Barbie And More Make Our Top 10 Movies Of The Year

There have been many good movies from the big and small screen across the world. Whether action, drama or horror, Bollywood and Hollywood, had much to surprise the audience with. But there were few movies that truly became talk of the town and captivated the audience. While Shah Rukh Khan returned to the big screen three times

Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani
The film directed by Karan Johar was anticipated release and did not disappoint fans with a fresh take on love. Not only did the film try to change the trends Karan’s old movies had set but also give a spin to them while maintaining the glamour of his stories. Alia Bhatt, and Ranveer Singh’s performances were loved by fans but, Dharmendra won hearts for his return to the screen.

Jawan
Shah Rukh Khan made a big return to the screen after a long break. Apart from Jawan, he was also seen in Pathan and Dunki. However, Jawan’s collaboration with south director Atlee turned out to be one of the best releases. While the story does not have anything new to add, it follows the usually south cinema formula, but the execution and action left fans more than happy.

12th Fail
The film is one of the best releases of the year, led by Vikrant Massey the film explores the story of a real officer from Chambal. It also draws from the struggles of the millions of students who attempt the UPSC entrance exam but loose heart due to the system and the lack of good infrastructure in India for students. Though dramatic the performances by the led and supporting actors like Anshumaan Pushkar and Anant V Joshi were remarkable.

All That Breathes
The documentary saw much love from the international and Indian community. Set in New Delhi documents two brothers’ struggle to save a majestic black kite, one of many birds of prey essential to the city’s ecosystem. The film also attempts at commentary about society, but it is the emotional strings that touched the audience the most.

Ponniyin Selvan: Part Two
The film brought back Aishwarya Rai back to the big screen with a great role that is worthy of her skills. But the film also surprised with a great deal of romance which was missing from the films for years. With heart wrenching performances by both Vikram and Aishwarya, their love story truly managed to move many. The film is also unmissable due to its massive cast, lore and production.

Barbie
Barbie essentially changes the chemical composition of its audience. It turned into cultural phenomenon and made 2023 a women’s year. People could not stop talking about the film, its subtext, its smart writing, comedy and the cast. Margot Robbie truly gifted a great moment for women around the world with Barbie.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
The film has been one of the best animated films of the year among other released like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, however this Sony film surpassed others in many ways. From its animations, storytelling to voice acting, there were many things about Across The Spider-verse that caught everyone’s attention, however for most it was the direction and the subtext that came along with it.

John Wick 4
Wick once again takes on a fight against global forces. The film somewhat attempts to end the story for Keanu’s character but it doesn’t loose its mark when it comes to the action. Much of 2023 has been a year of action and John Wick is on the top of the list. The franchise is known for giving audience what they want, the unmissable and revolutionary ways to essentially kill anyone and Wick does not dissappoint.

Oppenheimer
The film became a sensation thanks to its first look of Cillian Murphy. The film follows Oppenheimer known for making the Atomic bomb. The film attempts to showcase different side of the creator, the time. Instead of picking sides the film tries to show how the decision were personal, and different for everyone. It paints a picture of the past maybe not with accuracy but with a three dimensional view, as things could have happened, while not trying to absolve any one of their deeds or guilt.

Wonka
The latest release immediately grabbed a spot on the list for being the most wholesome movie of the year. The film makes it very clear it isn’t here to give you a deep dive into life, but does it anyway but merely making you laugh like a child. Unlike many children films, the film and its characters do go through real situations with real consequences and the magic only makes it more fun.
