‘I Knew It Was a Lie’: Nana Patekar Speaks Out On Tanushree Dutta’s MeToo Accusations

In 2018, amidst the global #MeToo movement, Indian actress and model Tanushree Dutta ignited a firestorm in Bollywood. She accused veteran actor Nana Patekar of sexual harassment during the 2008 film shoot of “Horn Ok Pleassss.” Dutta claimed the song sequence, originally planned as a solo performance, became a hostile environment when Patekar allegedly pressured her into additional, inappropriate physical contact.

Her allegations also extended to choreographer Ganesh Acharya and director Vivek Agnihotri, bringing the issue of sexual misconduct in the Indian film industry to the forefront.

Case Dismissed, Patekar Responds

Dutta’s accusations led to the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) against Patekar. However, the case was dismissed within a year due to a lack of substantial evidence and supporting witnesses. Nana Patekar recently addressed the controversy in an interview, asserting his innocence and stating that he never reacted with anger because he believed the accusations were false. He further commented on the influence of social media, claiming he doesn’t engage with online commentary, positive or negative.

Lasting Impact on Bollywood

Despite the dismissal of the case against Patekar, Tanushree Dutta’s allegations sparked a significant conversation in Bollywood. The incident highlighted the prevalence of sexual harassment within the industry and ignited a much-needed discourse on accountability and misconduct.

The ripple effects of the #MeToo movement in India continue to be felt, raising awareness and prompting action towards creating a safer work environment for actors and actresses alike.
