Richa Chadha On Kangana Ranaut Contesting Lok Sabha Elections: ‘I Should Be Allowed To Speak My Mind’

For years, ever since Kangana Ranaut became a vocal supporter of the BJP, many speculated that the actor will jump into the world of politics.

The speculations turned out to be true when Kangana was announced as the BJP candidate from the constituency of Mandi in Himachal Pradesh for the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections.

Richa Chadha, too, has been very open about her political leanings and beliefs, often taking to Twitter to speak about current political issues. This has, in the past, put her into the center of multiple controversies.

Currently, Richa Chadha is promoting her latest show, Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, which has been created and directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Chadha plays the role of Lajjo, a tawaif in the red-light district of Heera Mandi in Lahore during the British Raj.

In an interview with Zoom, Chadha spoke about Bollywood actors joining politics, which isn’t a new occurrence at all. She also spoke about whether or not she will ever enter politics herself.

Chadha said, “All the best to whoever from the acting field, who wants to join politics, but I have no such aspirations. I think it is the imperative duty of every citizen in a democracy to be able to voice their opinion. If you are taking my vote, if you are taking my taxes on everything, be it direct or indirect taxes, from GST, VAT, road taxes and even entertainment tax, I should be allowed to speak my mind. And this is the key difference between autocracy and democracy.”

Chadha also talked about the praise she received from Rekha for her performance in Heeramandi.

Talking about the same, Chadha said, “Receiving praises and love from someone as revered as Rekha Ji is a moment I will cherish forever. I couldn’t have asked for bigger validation, my heart is full. There’s a song in the series, which is my solo mujra. For that I referenced her song from Umrao Jaan… she has been my inspiration, my hero, and she’s the definition of what an icon is. Her kind words and affection towards my performance left me speechless and deeply touched. I will never forget this night and her blessings.”

Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar will begin streaming on 1 May on Netflix.
