Richa Chadha Says Her Role In Kangana Ranaut Starrer Panga Was Diluted: ‘I Was Excited… But It Went South’

Richa Chadha and Kangana Ranaut may come across as natural enemies, especially because the former is an outspoken liberal whereas the latter is currently a Lok Sabha candidate from BJP during the ongoing 2024 General Elections.

Back in 2020, the two actors, who are politically the polar opposite of one another, starred in a movie together titled Panga. In Panga, Kangana Ranaut was the lead whereas Richa Chadha played the role of her best friend.

Recently, in an interview with Galatta Plus, Richa Chadha spoke about her role in Panga, saying that she wasn’t happy with the way her character was diluted while the movie was being shot. Chadha was also asked about a previous statement she made where she said that going from a lead role to a supporting role in Bollywood is a ‘demotion.’

She said, “I kind of opted out of a lot of scenes in that one, I’ll tell you… Especially towards the end. I was excited about it because I thought the film would be about female athletes and how choices are tougher for them, in between having a child and… but somewhere along the line, it went south for me. So I was like, ‘Give me a guest appearance.’”

Richa Chadha then continued, “I would say it had more meat, definitely… It’s not about the supporting part, the small part, the special appearance. None of that really matters to me because I feel like I hold my own no matter where I am.”

Richa Chadha was most recently seen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Netflix show Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar alongside Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Sharmin Segal Mehta, and Taha Shah Badussha. She played the role of Lajwanti aka Lajjo, the foster daughter of Manisha Koirala’s character Mallikajaan.

Panga wasn’t a commercial success but received a lot of critical praise. It is written and directed by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari from a screenplay by Nitesh Tiwari. Kangana Ranaut’s performance in Panga garnered widespread critical acclaim, winning her the National Film Award for Best Actress in 2021.
