Vidya Balan Says ‘Male Stars Are Uncomfortable’ With Female-Led Films; ‘Women Are Doing Better Than They Are’

Vidya Balan is known for her exceptional work in female-led films like Kahaani, Sherni, The Dirty Picture and more. Recently, she shared her thoughts on the success of Kareena Kapoor, Tabu and Kriti Sanon’s Crew. The actress believed that the Hindi film industry is going through a change post the success of women-led films.

In an interview with Indian Express, Vidya Balan opined that ‘male stars are uncomfortable’ when female actors take centre stage. She said, ”I don’t think they’d be okay with anyone stealing the thunder. But I never felt bad. I was like if they are threatened, what can I do?”

She did not hold back on talking about the subject due to her own experiences of dealing with criticism for doing female-led movies. ”Back in the day? I don’t think they’d be okay, even today, to star in a Vidya Balan film or a female-led film for that matter,” she said. Vidya Balan further added, ”It’s their loss honestly because we are doing better films than they are. I genuinely believe that. They are doing more formulae-based films, women-led films are far more exciting”.

During the conversation, the interviewer also asked Vidya Balan about her thoughts on Crew’s success amid ‘macho blockbusters’. To this, she pointed out, ”Not all macho blockbusters are doing well. I think we need to remember that.”

”Here’s a film that had three women lead it. It was so much fun, they weren’t taking themselves too seriously and it thrills me that a film with three women and at the age that they’re at is doing so well. We’re experiencing a change as it’s happening. I think it’s a wonderful time. I was a bit worried after the pandemic because people were being conservative about women led films,” Vidya Balan stated.
