A fashion student from NIFT Mumbai captivated the online world with his innovative reinterpretation of Shah Rukh Khan’s Met Gala 2025 ensemble. Utkarsh Upadhyay, leveraging AI tools and his profound appreciation for Indian textiles, reimagined the outfit in five distinct styles, earning widespread acclaim. His designs have exploded across social media, with numerous fans asserting that they surpass the original look donned by SRK.
Shah Rukh Khan marked his Met Gala debut this year in a striking black ensemble crafted by Sabyasachi, featuring a long jacket, shirt, and trousers in coordinated hues, complemented by layered jewellery, statement rings, and a walking stick adorned with a Royal Bengal tiger head. The outfit aligned seamlessly with the event’s theme, which honored Black style and exquisite tailoring. Although SRK’s look garnered significant praise, Utkarsh’s renditions infused the concept with creative flair.
Utkarsh showcased five reimagined outfits on Instagram, each drawing inspiration from India’s rich textile heritage and traditional aesthetics. One design incorporated vibrant Bandhani prints, characteristic of Gujarat and Rajasthan. Another drew from the architectural elegance of Mumbai’s Art Deco landmarks, presenting Shah Rukh in a sophisticated vintage-inspired look with black and gold tones. Among the most celebrated was a coat intricately embroidered with delicate Parsi Gara work. Another design featured luxurious Kashmiri pashmina, fashioned into a cape paired with a jacket. The final was a contemporary enhancement of Sabyasachi’s original design, enriched with intricate detailing.
In his post, Utkarsh said he’s inspired by SRK and Indian crafts, and wanted to mix tradition with glamour. Fashion enthusiasts lauded his creations, urging that they deserve a global stage. Many felt these designs embodied the Met Gala’s essence more authentically than the original outfit. He began his post with, “Please don’t hate me for this – I’m just a fashion student trying to experiment and celebrate our culture. This is simply fan art, nothing more. Thank you!”
