Raanjhanaa is filmmaker Aanand L Rai’s one of the most celebrated projects. Released in 2013, the Dhanush, Sonam Kapoor & Abhay Deol starrer has garnered a cult following over the years. The news that the film will be re-released on the big screens on August 1 has left the audience gushing about watching the masterpiece again in theatres. However, if media reports are to be believed, the production house, Eros International, is planning to re-release the film with a different ending.
Yes, you read that right! As reported by the Free Press Journal, the production house will be releasing the film in theatres with a different climax, a “happy” ending, which is made with the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Devastated upon getting the news of the alterend climax from social media, Rai clarified that they didn’t consult him on it before making the decision. He slammed Eros International for changing the ending that the audience loved.

Talking to the Indian Express’ SCREEN about it, the 54-year-old filmmaker said, “I just can’t wrap my head around this. I don’t get it, how can they do this? It’s an ending people have loved! If not the filmmaker, at least listen to the audience.”
He went on to question, “What is a happy ending? It’s a tragedy, that’s an emotion. How can you meddle with emotions? The voice of the film lies in that ending.”

The Atrangi Re director added that he has now learnt his lesson and will be careful going forward while “signing the dotted line.” He added, “I’m dealing with this, but other filmmakers should learn from this. A studio doesn’t care about the story. Just to earn a few crores, they’re tampering with a writer, director, and actor’s creation.”
Concluding his point, Rai stated that while he isn’t against the use of technology, it should only be used for future projects and not change the past movies. “Use it for the future or for the present. Don’t use it to distort the past! Next thing we know, they may change the climax of Sholay by keeping both Jai and Veeru alive,” Aanand L Rai shared.
