Imtiaz Ali Had Doubts About Casting Diljit Dosanjh For Amar Singh Chamkila; ‘Wasn’t Sure…’

Director Imtiaz Ali recently opened up about his initial doubts regarding the casting of Diljit Dosanjh in the lead role of his upcoming film, ‘Amar Singh Chamkila.’

In an interview with Pinkvilla, Imtiaz confessed, “I wasn’t sure whether it’s gonna work out with Diljit for some reason. I thought he might not be able to do it.”

However, his perception changed after meeting the actor. Imtiaz shared that Diljit became a ‘sure shot thing’ after he spoke to him and says that now he “can’t imagine anybody else doing it.”

The film, which also stars Parineeti Chopra as Diljit’s singer-wife Amarjot, is set to release on Netflix on April 12. Explaining why the movie is getting an OTT release, Imtiaz said that people who are not from Punjab and even India, and those who do not speak the native language should also watch the movie.

It is based on the life of Amar Singh Chamkila, the ‘Elvis of Punjab’ who took the region by storm in the 1980s. While he quickly rose to fame, Chamkila also made enemies owing to his explicit songs and ‘objectionable’ lyrics.

Chamkila was just 27 years old when he and his wife, who was also a singer, and two others were gunned down by unknown assassins on March 8, 1988. Reports say the murder is still a mystery and that no arrests have been made in the case.
