Konkona Sen Sharma Says She Had ‘The Best Kind Of Nepotism’ Because Of Mother Aparna Sen: ‘It Is Unfair, But…’

Actress and filmmaker Konkona Sen Sharma is the daughter of a well-known film director, screenwriter, and actress, Aparna Sen.. Having established herself in the Bengali entertainment industry, the filmmaker launched her daughter with Mr and Mrs Iyer (2002), co-starring Rahul Bose. Despite it being Konkona’s third film, it catapulted her career to success. The actress, who is currently making waves with her performance in Metro… In Dino, she recalled working with her mother and also weighed in on the ongoing nepotism debate in Bollywood.

Opening up about it all, while reflecting on her career path, the 45-year-old actress shared with Zoom that even though she benefited from industry connections, her journey wasn’t driven by ambition but by luck and privilege. Sharing her views on it all, she shared that she had the “best kind of nepotism in a way.”

Quoted by News18, Sharma added, “Today, I realise it was a dream to work with my mother. In terms of nepotism, which is such a hot topic now, yes, I have had the best kind of nepotism in a way. I have had so much privilege and so much luck that it wasn’t that I wanted to become an actor. I didn’t. My mother had no plans to launch me.”

Recalling how she was cast in Mr and Mrs Iyer, the Wake Up Sid actress recalled that her mother was writing the story on her desktop, which was in Konkona’s room. She would read out the script aloud to her and based on the expressions the actress had, the veteran filmmaker thought her daughter should “play this part.”

“A lot of the time, I don’t get dragged into this nepotism. Do I think it is unfair? Yes, it is unfair, but it happens everywhere. I would always like to acknowledge my luck and privilege in this situation that I got to do Mr And Mrs Iyer as my third film,” she concluded.

For those who don’t know, the Aparna Sen directorial Mr and Mrs Iyer became a turning point in Konkona’s career. Over the years, the mother-daughter duo has collaborated in movies like Titli, 15 Park Avenue, and Iti Mrinalini, among others.

On the work front, Konkona Sen Sharma was last seen on the big screens in Anurag Basu’s film Metro… In Dino. A spiritual sequel to the director’s 2007 film Life… In A Metro, the film stars Pankaj Tripathi, Sara Ali Khan, Aditya Roy Kapoor, Ali Fazal, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Neena Gupta, and Anupam Kher in pivotal roles.
