Indian comedian Kunal Kamra, known for pointing facts about the country’s political systems through his stand up event, has yet again found himself in trouble. On Sunday evening, the workers of Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena vandalised Khar’s comedy studio The Habitat for performing a joke on Shinde. Kamra, through a popular song from Dil To Pagal Hai, spoke about Maharastra’s political state and allegedly called the latter a ‘gaddar’ for separating from his own party.

As snippets of the brutal vandalism went viral, netizens started lashing out at the unfairness of it all. Now amidst all the ruckus, The Habitat has announced that they are shutting down until they find a platform for free expression, which doesn’t put them and their property in jeopardy. It is to be noted that even Samay Raina’s comedy shot India’s Got Latent was shot there. Being a common factor between both the controversies, the studio took to their official Instagram handle to express their shock.

They shared how they are worried and “extremely broken” due to the acts of vandalism “targeting” them. The post clarified that the artists that perform there are “solely responsible” for their views and creative choices. Denying their involved in the content that is performed by artists, they shared that recent events have made them “rethink about how we get blamed and targeted every time almost like we are the proxy for the performance.”
Quoted by the Free Press Journal, the note further read, “We are shutting down till we figure out the best way to provide a platform for free expression without putting ourselves and our property in jeopardy. We invite all artists, audience and stakeholders to discuss and share their views free and request your guidance so that we also respect the performers rights.” They went on to conclude their not by stating, “Violence and destruction undermine the very spirit of art and dialogue.”

For those who don’t know, The Habitat is owned by Balraj Singh Ghai, one of Samay Raina’s closest friends. Now that The Habitat has closed down, the audiences will eagerly want to know what the future of the studio looks like.
