The much-anticipated Bollywood film Dhadak 2, featuring Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri, has encountered a snag with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) over its depiction of caste discrimination. Directed by Shazia Iqbal and backed by Dharma Productions, this sequel to the 2018 film Dhadak was set to hit theaters on 28 March 2025 during the Holi weekend. However, its release now hangs in the balance due to certification delays.
A source close to the production shared, “The subject of the film revolves around caste discrimination, which has raised some eyebrows.” The filmmakers submitted Dhadak 2 for review in late January 2025, expecting a straightforward process. Instead, the CBFC’s Examining Committee escalated the matter to the Revising Committee for a more thorough assessment. As of 26 February 2025, no final decision has been made, leaving the team in limbo.

This hiccup could affect more than just Dhadak 2. The film’s planned release date aligns with John Abraham’s action-packed The Diplomat, also slated for 28 March 2025. An industry insider warned, “The Holi weekend is a big opportunity for films to draw crowds, and this uncertainty isn’t ideal for the Dhadak 2 team.” If the censor clearance isn’t secured soon, the movie might either miss its slot or face a direct box-office showdown with The Diplomat, potentially splitting audiences and impacting earnings for both.

The first Dhadak, a remake of the Marathi hit Sairat, starred Janhvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter and tackled caste issues in a romantic narrative. Dhadak 2 follows suit, with Siddhant and Triptii as the fresh faces carrying the story forward. Despite the setback, optimism persists. “The makers are cooperating fully with the CBFC and are optimistic about a positive outcome,” a source affirmed. Fans will have to wait and see how this unfolds as the certification process continues.
