Sunny Deol and Shah Rukh Khan, who co-starred in the 1993 film Darr, had a rift that led to a long period of silence between them. Three decades later, Sunny has taken a step toward reconciliation, voicing his interest in working with Shah Rukh again on screen.
At Pinkvilla’s Masterclass, when asked which actor he’d choose for a two-hero project, Sunny named Shah Rukh, highlighting his wish for a reunion. He also remarked that the film industry has evolved, with directors now having less influence over character development, which he believes creates a favorable moment for them to collaborate once more.
Sunny said, “Aise decide karna kiske saath karunga nahi… I mean, I would love to do it. I think anyone who is… Shah Rukh ke saath ek hi film ki thi. Toh ek aur kar sakte hain. It would be nice because that was a different period, and now it’s a different period, so definitely.”
Sunny added, “Pehle hamare directors had control over the whole thing. Aaj kal hamare directors ke paas itna control nahi hai aur kahaniyaan waisi ban bhi nahi rahi hain, which will justify the images of the actors. Woh bahut zaroori hai.”

Meanwhile, Sunny Deol and Shah Rukh Khan reportedly drifted apart after their 1993 film Darr, where Shah Rukh’s portrayal of a villainous stalker overshadowed Sunny’s role as the hero. Sunny felt uneasy about the film’s decision to glamorize Shah Rukh’s character, which he believed detracted from his own heroic lead. This tension allegedly kept them from speaking for 16 years. Reflecting on the experience during an episode of Aap Ki Adalat, Sunny shared, “At the end of the day, people loved me in the film. They loved Shah Rukh Khan as well. My only issue with the film was that I did not know they would glorify the villain. I always work in films with an open heart and believe in the person. I believe in working with trust. Unfortunately, we have many actors and stars who don’t function in this manner. Maybe that’s the way they want to get their stardom.”
